A RURAL ESCAPE WITH THE DAM AN EXTENSION OF THE GARDEN
Once a functioning sheep and cattle farm, this dam was surrounded by a paddock of pasture grasses, poplars and willows, requiring high maintenance and frequent mowing.
The new owners wanted to transform the property into a rural escape, incorporating the dam as an extension of the garden. The dam was reshaped and rehabilitated, incorporating basalt boulders and logs, varied water depths, native and indigenous plants to increase the ecological value of the site and support local wildlife. This wetland now teems with insects, birds, reptiles and aquatic life.
WINDING PATHS
A meandering pathway leads around the dam through layered native planting, with species chosen as much for their habitat value as their aesthetic appeal.
LOCAL STONE
A curved basalt retaining wall gently holds the slope, giving a sense of immersion as plants spill over the wall towards the pathway. A stone seat offers a place of rest, while steps lead up to a secluded seating area surrounded by Eucalypts, Banksias and shrubs – this peaceful spot is frequented by our client and birds alike.
AIR & WATER
The iconic windmill feeds a small waterfall which tumbles down boulders back into the dam, helping to oxygenate the water.
