Designed for a large and social family, the garden balances openness with play. A vibrant and welcoming productive front garden removes the boundary to the street, sharing the ever-changing moments of masses of flowers, produce to share and changes of colour. The rear landscape on the other hand is a shaded lusher green space that supports recreation, gathering and exploration

RECREATION AND GATHERING FOR A LARGE FAMILY

The rear garden is designed as a flexible family space for living and play, with a dining terrace alongside a lawn and a basketball court keeping family and friends busy with meals and matches. Lined with informal hedging and layered planting, the family has tuned into the rhythms of resident skinks, birds and the markings insects leave along their trails.

SHARING THE EXPERIENCE

The garden has become a magical place for our family, neighbours and visitors. It buzzes with bees, dragonflies, ladybugs and a variety of butterflies. We have learned to spot the caterpillars in the gardens that will grow into friendly butterflies. The arrival of garden skinks have delighted children and adults alike, sometimes poking their heads out during an afternoon BBQ to see whatu2019s disturbed their peace. And all the birds - resident magpies and noisy miners, lorikeets, cockatoos, galahs and the yearly visits from eastern rosellas and king parrots together help to signal the movement of the day and the seasons

ESTABLISHED TREE CHALLENGES

While a number of mature trees dictated the spatial layout, they also provided an opportunity to experiment with a mix of tough, shade-loving natives. Native ferns, Croweas and Scaevolas support flowering across every season.
